10 years ago, I made a decision: I wanted to help people feel better inside and out.
In 2010 I was Teacher Assistant working with children out of the Edmonton AB School District. I worked with children with specific needs, including children with medical needs, behavioral needs, speech and language therapy, as well as children on the autistic spectrum. Before joining the school board, I had been a stay-at-home Mother raising my four children after Graduating with a Diploma from NAIT’s Dental Assistant Program in 1978 (Woah, did just date myself or what?)
When my youngest daughter started Grade 1, I wanted to go back into the workforce and give back to my community.
My mom suggested I work with children like my 2nd oldest daughter, who is on the autistic spectrum. I was honestly insecure about applying because of my only having a Dental Assisting background, but I managed to get an interview.
I was asked “Convince me why I should hire you.” I explained my position and my circumstances- I explained how the techniques, the understanding and compassion I had for my daughter and other children like her was an advantage because of my firsthand experience. I was hired on the spot.
I ended up working in the school district for 17 years after that, however after a while, work started to take a toll on my mental health. As fulfilling as it was working with and helping families and children like my daughter, my home life and work life started mixing in ways that blurred the line between work/life balance.
I decided I needed to start a new chapter in my life and I had always thought about becoming a Registered Massage Therapist. I had never pursued that dream until a colleague of mine decided to enter a program called “MH Vicars School of Massage Therapy”. So, as a woman in my mid-fifties, I did the thing that terrified me the most: I went back to school.
Admittedly I was intimidated at seeing all the young faces in the room, I questioned myself and doubted myself more times than I cared to admit. Luckily, my fellow classmates became my family and support network, so much so that they called me their “Massage Mom”.
Finally in 2016 (the same year my youngest daughter graduated from University) I graduated from the Massage Therapy Program and finally achieved my long standing dream of becoming an RMT and owning my own massage therapy business.
I am overwhelmed by how far my life has come since my days at NAIT. With how the world has changed over the years, 2020 is shaping up to be another test of my determination to continue my passion and live my motto “Do what you love, and love what you do”. I hope this can inspire someone to see my story and know that it's never too late to pursue your dream and age is just a number.
I love helping my clients decrease their acute and chronic pain while increasing their physical and mental well-being and I look forward to working together to create a customized treatment that works for you!
Massage is a tool to help heal. Whether it's stress, illness or simply to pamper yourself, the benefits of massage can be life changing. I would be honored to take that journey with you.
